4 Animals Rescued from Hoarder/Breeder

Thanks to the diligent and hard work of Sgt. Larry Rogers and the Jonesboro Animal Control Department, 12 dogs, 8 cats and 4 less-than-a-week old kittens are no longer living in seriously poor conditions.  Thursday, the owner of the animals, who lived within the Jonesboro city limits and could have faced multiple charges, surrendered the dogs to Jonesboro Animal Control, who in turn ask NAFA to take control of them.

The current Animal Control Facility is not equipped to handle cats at all and the dogs needed immediate medical care, grooming and a quite environment.  Most of the dogs are covered in urine soaked hair and feces.  In a few cases the large mats have cause open sores.

One female Shih Tzu will give birth with in the next 7-10 days and several others are in heat.

One sweet black older mix dog had actually grown skin around its collar.  When the collar was finally loosened and volunteers began attempting to remove it, maggots pored from a 3" wound.

The filthy, matted, frightened and underweight small Shih Tzus, beagles and mixed breed dogs spent last night resting quietly, with their own blanket, soft toy and full bellies.  The cats quickly adjusted to their new routine and were purring contently before the end of the night.

Many of the dogs have horrendously long nails, causing them pain when they walk.  Nails of excessive length can cause arthritis and other joint problems as a result of the dogs' toes constantly being twisted and turned.

Throughout the next several days, the animals will receive a health checks, heartworm tests, feline leukemia tests, vaccinations, deworming, baths, and grooming.  They will then move into approved foster homes until permanent homes can be found.

NAFA is asking the community to come together to help these dogs.  The immediate needs are:

· blankets and towels,

· newspapers,

· dog and cat toys,

· cat litter,

· and of course, funds for medications, vet care, food, parasite control and other items.

NAFA also needs qualified temporary foster homes.  If you would consider fostering one of these animals, please email wanndat@fastdata.net
